After completing the online classroom course, you will receive your course completion documentation. You must also complete the required behind-the-wheel instruction and supervised driving hours before taking the Ohio driving and skills tests. The exact next steps depend on your age and licensing situation.
Ohio drivers ages 18–20 applying for an initial driver license must complete a Class D driver education program that includes 24 hours of classroom or online instruction and 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training. They must also complete 50 hours of supervised driving practice, including at least 10 hours at night, and bring the completed BMV 5791 form to their driving-test appointment.
Ohio 24-Hour New Driver (18+)
Limited Term Non-Renewable/Non-Transferable applicants may have additional driver-training and supervised-driving requirements. Effective June 30, 2025, the Ohio BMV directs these applicants to review the Ohio Traffic Safety Office requirements, complete the BMV 5791 Fifty-Hour Affidavit, and bring the completed form to the driving-test appointment. Applicants age 21 or older seeking an initial limited term license may also be required to complete approved driver training and 50 hours of supervised driving, unless an exemption applies.
